Brisbane (McAuley at Banyo)

McAuley Banyo Campus

The Brisbane Campus (McAuley at Banyo) has its origins in McAuley College, which was formed in 1955 by the Sisters of Mercy for the preparation of Sisters of Mercy to teach in Catholic schools. It soon extended its mission to include members of other Religious Orders, and was further extended in 1973 when lay students were admitted.

Responsibility for the College changed to the Archdiocese of Brisbane in 1976, then to Bishops of Queensland in 1983. Sites for the College included All Hallows in central Brisbane, Dutton Park, and Michelton.

Due to the increasing demand for undergraduate and postgraduate places, ACU National accepted the Bishops of Queensland’s offer in 1998 of buildings and grounds of the Banyo Seminary site. The Pius XII Provincial Seminary dates back almost 140 years. The first Catholic Bishop of Brisbane, Bishop James Quinn, acquired the property in 1863. During the late 1920’s Archbishop James Duhig began planning the construction of the Seminary, and it opened in 1941 with an intake of 56 students. Until the end of 2001, the Pius XII Seminary was the venue for instruction for men of the Roman Catholic faith who wish to enter the priesthood. At the end of 1990 the Council of McAuley College handed responsibility for the College and its operations to Australian Catholic University.

The new Brisbane Campus (McAuley at Banyo), has five schools, offering Education, Nursing, Arts, Social Science, Theology and Business and Information Systems, plus a wide range of postgraduate courses.

With over 2,700 students enrolled at ACU National’s Brisbane Campus (McAuley at Banyo) the campus is rightly proud of its history.
