Commonwealth Scholarships

Commonwealth Scholarships (CS) are intended to facilitate choice in higher education and to increase participation of students from low socio-economic backgrounds by providing them with some financial assistance. There are three (3) types of Commonwealth Scholarship:

  • Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarships (CECS); up to 4 years
  • Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarships (CECS – Associate Degrees); up to 2 years
  • Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarships (CAS); up to 4 years
  • Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarships (CAS – Associate Degrees); up to 2 years
  • Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarships (CAS – Indigenous Payment); once only payment
  • Indigenous Access Scholarships (IAS)

Financial value

In 2009, ACU National expects to award over 140 CECS and CAS to students from low socio-economic backgrounds. In 2009, the CECS are valued at $2,207 per year (indexed for two or four years depending on your course), the CAS is valued at $4,415 per year (indexed for two or four years depending on your course) and the Indigenous Access Scholarship is a once only payment valued at $4,166. The University will also award eighteen ACU National Equity Bursaries of $2,000 each.

What courses are covered by Commonwealth Scholarships

The following ACU National courses are covered by Commonwealth Scholarships:

  • All associate degrees
  • All undergraduate degrees
  • All honours degrees
  • Graduate Diploma in Education (Secondary)
  • Graduate Diploma in Midwifery
  • Graduate Certificate in Mathematics
  • Master of Teaching (Primary)
  • Master of Teaching (Secondary)

Selection criteria

Applicants must be Australian citizens or holders of a permanent humanitarian visa who can demonstrate financial disadvantage, and in the case of CAS, a need to move from a regional or remote area to pursue their studies.
