Melbourne Campus Students Association (MCSA)
Who are we? What do we do?
The MCSA is your student association, run by students - for students. We endeavour to enhance the already vibrant lifestyles and cultures on St Patrick's Campus by bringing them right to the student body. Events such as Orientation Camp, St Patrick's Day, Cultural celebration days, Pub Crawls, Good Friday Appeal Trivia Night, Comedy Night, Australian Uni Games, Inter-Campus events, Free Feeds, Bar & Live Music afternoons and nights, and the annual End of Year Ball are only the foundation of the MCSA's commitment to students.
We also provide student advocacy and representation, opportunities to participate in ACU National event and initiatives, opportunities for professional and personal development through leadership on the MCSA Management Committee, First aid and RSA courses, and we encourage and promote ACU National's mission statement and the growth of all students in the ethos of the university.
In 2008 our main objectives are to consolidate on the successes of 2007 and to further develop and strengthen the MCSA for the benefit of its members and the wider student body and ACU National Community.
In 2008 we aim to:
- Serve, support and represent first and foremost, our financial members;
- Extend the services offered in the MCSA Membership Package.
- Provide an avenue for all St Patrick's students in social, cultural, sporting, recreational, academic and professional development and spiritual pursuits.
- Support student groups such as ACUSA, Melbourne's very own proactive social justice group;
- Provide all students with a unique and exciting university experience
What is VSU? How does it affect students?
VSU legislation, introduced in Federal Parliament in 2006 has effectively stripped the MCSA and all other ACU National student associations of much needed funding. Prior to 2006, each student was required to pay a compulsory student fee to the university each semester. A percentage of that money was given to the student associations in order to provide services to the university community where events were subsidised and facilities were easily obtainable. Since July 2006, students have not needed to pay the fees and the affects have been felt massively. The legislation has led to a reduction in services available due to tighter budgets associated with the fall in revenue.
Some activities run by the MCSA have had to be cancelled; discounts on activities removed and once 'free' events now incur a charge. Lack of student support has also contributed significantly to the demise of services and activities. Without student support, your student association is in danger of ceasing its activities. Student life on campus will cease to exist. The vibrant and strong community that exists on the Strathfield campus will be extinguished, and the student body will no longer have a voice.
