MAXIMISE YOUR CAREER PROSPECTS FROM THE DAY YOU START UNI
-
Research: Start a job folder and add to it as you go:
Read job ads, apply for position descriptions, make lists of positions you could apply for as a graduate. Learn the language of apllications.
-
Get work experience early - for networks, for referees.
Employers value experience. It builds up transferable skills.

-
Become known to ACU staff - for possible referees - but they must know you.
-
Try for good results
This is one employment self-marketing tool. Graduate positions often want you to supply academic transcripts.
-
Become involved in a variety of activities inside and outside Uni
(Include social and volunteer activities and part-time/casual jobs). This helps develop transferable skills.
-
Network
Make a list of contacts to interview over the time of your study (people in employment in which you are interested). Networking has been shown to be one of the most powerful ways of obtaining employment.
-
Join a Professional Association (become a student member)
For your resume, for networks and contacts, for conferences and seminars.
-
Seek references from past and present employers (fulltime, part-time, casual)
A personal profile can be built up from these.
-
Self-awareness-know your values, attributes, skills.
List these in your job file. Notice the feedback that you get from others. This helps to build up a picture of yourself that you can market to employers.
