Research Strengths

Australian Catholic University has several priority research areas.  Research Centres and Institutes represent areas of research and outreach where researchers make original contributions to their discipline and to the community in which they live and work.

Research Centres and Institutes

Research Institutes strengthen ACU's profile for research and collaboration with industry partners within key areas that fit with the educational ethos, philosophy and Mission of the University. The University Senate has approved the following criteria for the Designation of University Research Institutes:

  • To be consistent with the Mission of ACU;
  • To be internationally and nationally competitive
  • To have distinctive international and national quality;
  • To have obvious peer recognition;
  • To have demonstrable outcomes;
  • To attract research income;
  • To have postgraduate involvement;
  • To meet present and future needs;
  • To have possible multi-disciplinary connections; and
  • To be significant i.e. critical mass.

Institutes play an important promotional and developmental role beyond that of the Centre from which they may have developed.

Research Centres are ideal environments for researchers to work in an interdisciplinary environment, and with more experienced colleagues on topics of mutual interest. All Centres are reviewed triennially and must identify objectives and performance indicators as the basis for the review and their continuance. Guidelines for the Establishment of Centres are available.
