Transformation
August 6th is the traditional Feast of the Transfiguration – recalling the occasion when Jesus was changed before the eyes of his followers, ‘his face shone like the sun and his clothes became as bright as light’ (Mt 17: 2). In this week we also recall other transfiguring events: the use of atomic weapons on Hiroshima and Nagasaki – again witnesses have recorded that people’s faces shone like the sun and they were surrounded by extraordinary light.
These two instances of transformation highlight for us the potential we all have to engage with others in ways that transform their lives-either life-enhancing activities or to wreck destruction through our interactions with others. The Mission of ACU calls on all those who are members of the University – students and staff – to attend to all that is of concern to human beings with the goal of serving the common good. Clearly these are life-enhancing goals that are worth committing ourselves to.
Following Jesus’ transfiguration his followers were transformed and gained new understandings of his mission and their role in it. Just so, as we each strive to serve the common good, our striving and our activities are not only a tangible witness to the University’s mission – they are opportunities to transform the lives of others through our service. This week we should also reflect on the new understandings of ACU National’s Mission that emerge from our experiences of witness.
