The Lord is my Shepherd

“The Lord is my Shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.”

At this time of global financial crisis, two readings from sacred scripture come to mind. I wish to share some insights I have learned.

The parable of the ‘clever steward’ is as much about vulnerability as it is about honesty. The steward moves from one form of cocooning his vulnerabilities to another. He needs a job and so he steals and pads the accounts. How scared and vulnerable this man must have felt regarding his future. He anticipated that, in spite of his past behavior, he would be forgiven and offered hospitality.

Vulnerability is a sacred ancient gift by which I am nurtured and it is the fertile ground of growth. Within my deepest vulnerability, Jesus invites me into his generous hospitality, which He offers not in spite of who I am, but because of who I am.

The story of the young man who followed the Ten Commandments religiously – he asked Jesus what more could he do to gain salvation. Jesus replied, “Go, sell your possessions and give them to the poor”. He then went away sad as he was a wealthy man.

Psalm 23 declares:

“The Lord is my Shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.”

So why worry – Our Loving Father God is our good provider and showers us His abundant graces. We just have to count our blessings and be ever grateful for the precious gift of life, rather than brood on the material goods we have lost.
