Creativity in Cold Lentils
I recently shared a meal with friends at a restaurant. After the main course, the waitress offered us a spoonful of cold “sweetened lentils” topped with some exotic cheese, which she delivered with the assurance that it would “cleanse our palates”. I was somewhat sceptical – the idea of cold lentils did not sound at all appealing. You could imagine my surprise then when the lentils not only tasted great but did exactly what the waitress had promised! I couldn’t help but marvel at the genesis of the dish and the courage and creativity of the chef who fashioned it – who in their right mind would see that culinary combination featuring on the menu of a fine-dining restaurant?
Erich Fromm said that “creativity requires the courage to let go of certainties.” How difficult it is in the business of our daily lives to make the space to be creative, to seek out new solutions to old problems, to imagine the world differently. How often does fear of failure stifle our creativity and prevent us from offering to the world our unique gifts and new perspectives.
Let us take time this week to embrace our creativity, to blaze a new trail and sing our new song. As Richard Flynn recently reminded us “none of the old answers to the big questions are set in stone” except “that we are loved.” Let us risk failure this week for the sake of finding our own answers.
