What if God Was One of Us?

"What if God Was One of Us?"
“Who Are You?”
“I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For?”
“Help!”
“Wake up Dead Man!”

As the ACU National Radio pilot came to an end, the student DJs played “Holy Grail” as their last song. Throughout history, music and lyrics have challenged, transformed and changed the world. Songs of freedom, hope and revolution have been important to us, our friends and our families. They have given insights into what makes a difference in people’s lives and, at times, kept someone living for a day. Songs can help find confidence and lift us up and not be just a throwaway commodity that sometimes appears on Australian Idol.

Bob Dylan caught the whole existence of a movement and generation; Bob Geldof, Simple Minds, Rage Against the Machine, John Butler and Linkin Park get into the social conscience of people in a different way to a book, magazine or movie. Recently a student beautifully delivered the song, “You Raise Me Up” at a closing liturgy. We could all feel the powerful connection with his father who had died earlier in the year.

A song I hear on the radio can revitalize me and support me in my struggles. Next time when you’re driving to work, be mindful of the song that gives energy for a cause, or creates that feeling to catch up with another, or inspires the search for that place of justice and equity for all humans. And remember,

“To love another person is to see the face of God!”
