The Mad Dash
Lying in a hospital bed, my sister explains to me the dramatic events of the night before as she and her husband raced through busy traffic... praying for green lights as her contractions came closer together... they had to settle for a car park far away from the hospital and then make the mad dash along corridors... up escalators… in lifts...... and fortunately, after a relatively quick labour, her baby boy Ruben was born fit and healthy. Wow! What a difference 24 hours makes! Here she is tired but calm and nursing this new bundle of love that has arrived in our lives.
Any time a baby is born in the festive season, thoughts of what Christmas is really about come to mind - the hope, mystery, concern, wonder, waiting, and anticipation of that incredible gift. Christmas is also a time of the year when the stark realities of our world are evident between those who "have" and those who "have not". I hope that as my family celebrates the birth of a new baby boy this Christmas we are reminded to hold at the heart of our celebrations a genuine concern for justice and equity, and for the dignity of all human beings.
