May the evening's twilight find me gentle still

We have a week of celebrations ahead of us beginning with the “wearin’ of the green” (St Patrick’s Day) on Monday and culminating in the Resurrection of Jesus on Sunday with Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday to pass through on the way.  It is almost too much.

The Catholic Church in Australia, of course, had strong Irish beginnings and that can be both good news and bad news!  Our catholic Irish heritage is something many of us rejoice in with its blend of optimism and pessimism in fairly equal measure.  The following prayer captures some of this delightful ambivalence:

Loving God,
Give me a few friends
who will love me for what I am,
and keep ever burning
before my steps
the kindly light of hope...
And though I come not within sight
of the castle of my dreams,
teach me to be thankful for life,
and for time's olden memories
that are good and sweet.
And may the evening's twilight
find me gentle still.

And so throughout this week despite the rigours of Holy Week - or because of them - may we be found gently at the Resurrection on Sunday.  Happy Easter to us all!
