Its time to change
Is it true that a human being is only part of evolution and nothing more important than a fish? Traditional Christian theology teaches us that we are the image of God but does that mean we are superior?
According to Denis Edwards in his book, Jesus and the Cosmos, the universe is created by God and God is in control of it and the same God will complete the whole creation. Human beings are part of the history of evolution and are related to all other creatures and can be seen as the cosmos come to consciousness. God reveals to the cosmos through creation and finally through Jesus Christ. The risen Christ has united with the whole cosmos, so that his resurrection is
“the beginning of the transformation of the world.”This kind of theology invites us to respect the wholeness of creation and to hold human beings in special value.
Nowadays, we have enough nuclear power to destroy the earth but we also have the potential to contribute creatively to the world. It reminds me that in the creation story in the book of Genesis, everything is good in the eyes of God. But look at the threats that human beings bring to the world today: extinction of species, all sorts of pollution, exploitation and abuse of nature …. I think it’s time to change our attitudes towards all the other “good” things that God has made and reconsider our role in the cosmos.
